At St. John, everything begins and ends with Jesus.

We believe that God loves us—not because we have earned His love or lived good enough lives, but because of His grace. Jesus Christ came into this world for sinners, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again so that we might have forgiveness, life, and salvation. The Christian faith isn't primarily about what we do for God. It is about what God has done—and continues to do—for us.

One God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

We believe in one God who has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Father created us and continues to care for His creation. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became fully human while remaining fully God. He lived, died, and rose again for our salvation. The Holy Spirit works through God's Word to create and strengthen faith in Jesus.

Jesus Is at the Center

All people fall short of God's perfect will and need His forgiveness. We cannot fix that problem ourselves.

That's why Jesus came. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus paid for the sins of the world and defeated sin, death, and the devil. Forgiveness and eternal life are God's gifts, given freely because of Christ.

Grace Alone. Faith Alone. Scripture Alone.

These three simple phrases have long summarized Lutheran Christianity.

Grace Alone
We are saved entirely because of God's undeserved love for us—not because of our accomplishments, goodness, or works.  Ephesians 2:8–9 • Titus 3:4–7

Faith Alone
We receive God's gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Even faith itself is God's gift, created and sustained by the Holy Spirit.  Romans 3:28 • 1 Corinthians 12:3 • Philippians 1:29

 

Scripture Alone
The Bible is God's inspired and trustworthy Word. It is the source and standard for what we believe and teach.

God Still Comes to Us

God has not left us to search for Him on our own. He comes to us through His Word and through the Sacraments.

In Baptism, God connects us to Christ and gives His gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation.

In Holy Communion, Jesus gives us His true body and blood with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of our faith.

These are more than symbols or reminders. They are ways God has promised to deliver His grace to His people.

Faith Lived Together

Christian faith isn't meant to be lived alone.

God gathers His people into the Church to hear His Word, receive His gifts, encourage one another, pray together, and serve our neighbors.  At St. John, we describe that calling as Connecting People in the Heart of Jesus.

What Does It Mean to Be Lutheran?

St. John is a congregation of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS).

Lutherans stand within the historic Christian faith confessed by Christians for centuries. The Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds summarize foundational Christian beliefs about God and His work of salvation.

Our Lutheran Confessions explain those beliefs in greater detail and show how they are grounded in Scripture. 

These writings do not replace the Bible. Rather, we believe they faithfully explain what Scripture teaches.
